The thing that struck me about Wolfe (Torturer is the first book by him that i've picked up, i'm currently halfway through the Claw) is he has an extraordinary imagination which, to my mind, tells me I should imagine it, it asks the reader to apply as much meaning to the words as possible.

I was also told that there are a lot of literary references in the book. I had been warned that Severian is an unreliable narrator so that I was always on the lookout for inconsistencies. What I am afraid of though is that I might get it. Sometimes this became quite a hassle, especially when there were many in one page.īut inspite of that, the world and characters are interesting. Because of that, I never read the book without my smartphone to note these words and get their meaning. Not just the fictional words specific to the book but including the obscure, real world ones that you just don't see anywhere. There are also LOTS of words that are new to me.
